Redefining Life's Hand Through Cognitive Hypnotherapy
“You can’t change the cards you are dealt but you can change how you play them.”
I often find myself describing the whole process of therapy or coaching with this phrase. It’s come to be one of my core beliefs and what I am crazy passionate about bringing to others.
Those enlightening words were first coined by Randy Pausch, a celebrated computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, renowned for his inspirational "Last Lecture." Facing a terminal illness, he taught us that life's circumstances may often be beyond our control, but our resilience, mindset, and responses are what truly shape our experiences. Pausch's philosophy resonates deeply with the principles of Cognitive Hypnotherapy which offers a path to reprogram our "mental deck of cards" for a happier and more fulfilled life.
Life does indeed deal us a unique combination of nature and nurture cards, and sometimes our own minds, in their attempt to protect us, shuffle them in a way that may make us believe in an unchangeable fate or that we are fixed creatures stuck with our ways. This deception, however, couldn't be further from the truth.
The world is vast and to navigate it our brain computers have had to generalise, distort and delete information to simplify and build a comprehendible reality for us to navigate. 90% of our perception comes from memory and those memories were built by us upon other perceptions. We store our “way it is” and then have emotions that correlate with that reality. A narrative that feels like it is so true to us. To illustrate, imagine your mind as a grand house, complete with numerous beautiful rooms. Over time, you may have inadvertently confined yourself to just a few of these rooms, becoming habitually unaware of closed doors and blocked hallways. It's as if a childhood fear, once voiced, convinced you that going upstairs was too dangerous. This memory, now distant and almost forgotten, continues to influence your choices and behaviours.
Through the intervention of Cognitive Hypnotherapy, we can unearth hidden information and reorganise it. This process helps to restore balance to our perceptions, reshape our life narratives, and grants us access to resources we may not have realised were available. Not only does this hold the potential to enhance our capabilities and emotional resilience, but it also empowers us with the joyous realisation that we are adaptable and possess the power to create greater happiness for ourselves! :)
Reprogramming our mental deck is an ongoing journey toward greater fulfilment, a mindset of growth, possibility and potential. Life may deal us various cards, but how we choose to play them is where our power lies.
